Why do we bring evergreen plants into our homes during the darkest part of the year? Why do holly and ivy appear again and again in winter traditions? Why do we hang greenery and berries on our doors, decorate our windows and fill our homes with plants when everything outside seems to be sleeping?
And perhaps most importantly...
What on earth do spiders have to do with Christmas?
Join Bugs, Bones & Botany CIC for a wonderfully wintry workshop exploring the natural history, folklore and traditions tangled through our festive decorations.
Before we get stuck into making our own beautiful natural wreaths, we'll delve into some of the stories behind the greenery. We'll look at holly, ivy and other evergreens, and discover why people have brought them indoors for centuries. We'll explore old beliefs surrounding plants, berries, doors and windows, and how traditions have shifted and become woven into the Christmas celebrations we recognise today.
Of course, this is Bugs, Bones & Botany, so we couldn't possibly talk about winter greenery without including some of the smaller inhabitants of our homes and gardens.
Enter the Christmas spider.
We'll discover the charming folklore connecting spiders, webs and Christmas decorations, including stories that have been linked with the origins of shimmering tinsel. We'll also give the real spiders a little appreciation too. After all, while we're gathering greenery, they're still out there doing their very important spider business.
Then, armed with a head full of folklore, we'll settle in to create our own traditional natural wreaths, using seasonal greenery and decorations to make something beautiful to take home.

This workshop is designed for adults and older children alike, making it a lovely opportunity for families and generations to spend time together over a traditional seasonal craft. Older children who enjoy nature, folklore, history and making things are very welcome, while grown-ups are equally welcome to come without borrowing a child as an excuse!
