Insect Investigation
Get the bug pots out and head into the great outdoors! Whether it’s the garden, school playground, or a local park, we’ll go on a mini adventure to uncover some of nature’s smallest wonders. Together we’ll explore different types of insects, learn about their vital role in our planet’s ecosystems and record our discoveries just like real entomologists.
Location/Environment:
School playground, garden, park, woodland, or other outdoor spaces
What’s included:
- Bug pots, magnifiers, ID charts/resources, activity sheets, clipboards
- If location/weather allows - digital microscope to view insect samples and our finds from the session
- Optional - handling Indian stick insects!
What will we do?:
- Search for and safely collect mini-beasts
- Explore insect types, habitats, and behaviours
- Document findings like real entomologists
- Discuss why bugs are vital to ecosystems

Practical Requirements:
- Access to outdoor space (small or large)
- Weather-appropriate clothing and footwear
- Tables/chairs or ground mats for recording (clipboards will be provided)

- Suitable for ages 4+
- Can be tailored for EYFS, KS1, KS2, Scouts/Guides, or family sessions
- Also available as a themed party activity

(Recommended adult to child ratios - 1:6 for 4-8 year olds and 1:8 for 9-12 year olds, with at least two adults present at all times.)
